My name is Franny and I am a fitness business owner from Ottawa, Canada. I would like to share my story about my motivation for switching careers from a pharmacist to a fitness professional.

My fitness journey started several years ago when I was still working full-time as a pharmacist. My hours were all over the place and I didn’t have a regular eating and sleeping schedule. I was exhausted, I stopped going to the gym, made poor food choices, and didn’t like who I became. I gained weight and became so deconditioned that even walking up a flight of stairs would leave me huffing and puffing.

Soon after, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Getting the PCOS diagnosis terrified me. Women with PCOS have a much higher risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which translates to a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes. I started to exercise again. A few years later, I started struggling with infertility. PCOS is one of the most common causes of female infertility. After several years of trying to conceive and miscarrying, I fell into a deep depression. I started to question my role in society as a childless woman and the purpose of my existence in life. I lost hope in my future. I finally saw my doctor about my depression, and she advised me to increase my exercise, improve my mental health, focus on a healthy daily goal, and proactively prevent diabetes and heart disease.

With her advice, I hired a personal trainer, but this time I wasn’t just exercising for the sake of exercising, but rather, I was training towards a goal. I found a new passion for powerlifting. Through powerlifting, I felt empowered, strong, and confident in my newfound strength. Exercising regularly made such a big difference in my mood and my self-worth. Exercise became my therapy. I loved it so much that I became a personal trainer, group fitness instructor, Zumba instructor, and nutrition coach. I wanted to be able to inspire others to become personal trainers as well, so I also became a course instructor at canfitpro, Canada’s largest provider of fitness education. Through fitness, I was able to find my inner strength and my reason for waking up in the morning.
